“At the end of the day, remember that on the other side of the door, is a human being, who needs your help.”
A door is a barrier between two bodies of space. These bodies of space are disconnected in a physical sense through auditory and visual isolation, and even moreso, in an emotional sense through disconnect of communication. In a medical space, the two main components of the social and healing dynamic are the providers and their patients. Patients are detached from their community in their healing spaces and further within their own experience of pain and healing. On the other end, providers are also isolated in their high stress, heavy responsibility roles that are compounded onto a mentality of unyielding strength and resilience. Every patient and provider experience is unique internally and externally, and due to this uniqueness, the feeling of isolation often ensues.
Though a door is a barrier, if acted on by a voluntary force, it becomes an entryway and connection between separate entities. A simple choice to turn the handle of a door opens community and allows breaching of that formerly, isolating uniqueness of the human experience. Creating an opening between these entities allows also for both sides to understand, empathize, and care for one another. Through these connections, humans are able to remove their isolation and heal one another, providing space for grounding and support.
This body of work explores aspects of isolation in the patient and provider experience, as well as the community that supports and uplifts both, opening the door to foster understanding and healing in the human experience.

This body of work is dedicated to the TAMHSC College of Medicine Class of 2021 Temple “fam” -- an incredibly kind, compassionate, and inspiring group of people who have truly created a cohesive and supportive community for one another.
And to my creative companion who keeps me company while I create without chewing up any of my supplies.

A dear friend wrote these words in a letter to me and it took me by surprise. They’re simple words, but impactful and confident in their conviction. Seeing another’s words and having them directed at us makes it easier to internalize than in the self talk we give ourselves daily. This is likely because in some ways, words hold more value and validity when coming from an external source (proportional of course, to the source’s credibility and relationship to you). So here are these words in the hope that you can internalize them, too.

Sent to the Pharmacy
print, installation
2019
Sent to the Pharmacy is an interactive installation focusing on the dynamics of self care in today’s setting of fast paced, productive environments. An obsession with the productive creates a pride with self deprivation and guilt with self preservation. This piece is a set of prints in which the viewer creates their own prescription for their self care, allowing for the viewer to be active in reflection of their personal needs, after which they can self validate as both permission and accountability in their own care.

This sculpture is a look into the balance between the delicacy of a human disposition yet the seemingly simple rooting quality of intentional connection. The base exemplifies the aspect of time and growth in the development of these connections and their organic nature.
